Moxibustion

Moxibustion is most often used to build up and tonify the body to treat current conditions and also to prevent future disorder.

Moxibustion involves different methods for burning plant material on or near the surface of the skin.

It is used to bring heat, qi, and blood to the area and can be used to treat many conditions. It is most commonly used in women's health, breech positioned fetus, pain, insomnia, vertigo and dizziness, fatigue, weakness, atrophy or paralysis.

There are many mechanisms by which moxibustion provides healing. These could include temperature related factors, smoke effects, herbal effects and biophysical effects such as infrared.

Moxa comes in many forms including a rolled char stick, loose plant materials rolled into grains, cones or rolls, or even rolled into sticks similar to common incense. It is most often made from the Mugwart plant, but can include other herbs determined by intended therapeutic outcome.

Moxibustion is most often used to build up and tonify the body to treat current conditions and also to prevent future disorder. There is much research that suggests Moxibustion is effective in the treatment of cervical vertigo, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), chemotherapy-induced leucopenia, and various emergency conditions.

Moxibustion is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. While the risks are nearly unheard of, they could include allergies, burns, or infections. This treatment can benefit many conditions but keep in mind there are cautions and contraindications that require strict adherence to maintain safety and efficacy. Working with a trained professional will provide the lowest risk and greatest benefit for your health.
